Do you have a problem with the stairs leading up to your home being quite icy in the winter? If so, know that you do not need to shovel and salt your steps all winter long in order to keep them free of ice. Here is what you need to know about using heated step treads.

What Are Heated Step Treads?

Heated step treads are electric mats that will go on surfaces where you have the potential to slip and fall during the winter. They work by plugging into a nearby power source, and generate enough heat to melt the snow and ice that would normally collect on the step. You can purchase a larger mat to cover an entire surface or thin mats that go on individual steps. Each heated step tread can be linked to the one above and below it so that they all daisy chain off of one electrical outlet.

Do Heated Step Treads Stay On All Winter Long?

One thing to keep in mind about heated step treads is that they do not need to remain on and use electricity all winter long. You would turn on the power to the treads when you know that there will be weather conditions that cause snow or ice to form on your steps. There is no way for the heated step treads to sense the weather conditions and turn on automatically. However, there are ways to control some heated step treads remotely so that you don't have to physically plug in and unplug the devices.

Keep in mind that it is always best to turn on the heated step treads prior to snowfall. This helps the snow melt on contact. You can turn them after it snows, but it will take longer to melt the snow.

Do Heated Step Treads Require An Installation?

While heated step treads are capable of lying flat on your steps, consider securing them in place if you are worried about them slipping. They will have places where you can safely insert a screw through the tread so that it does not interfere with any of the electrical wiring inside the tread.

How Durable Are Heated Step Treads?

Once you have the heated step treads placed outside your home, know that you can safely leave them outside all winter long. They are designed to withstand the wear and tear that come from being outdoors in the snow and rain, and will not be damaged as a result.
